No one is born a record producer. Some start out as label executives (George Martin) or label owners (Rick Rubin). Others began as critics (Jon Landau) or managers (Andy Slater). Others come to it as studio owners, engineers or musicians.

Jeff Saltzman started out as an artist manager and attorney. He sought out talented new bands, helped them get record deals, and guided their careers. He represented Green Day, Rancid, Offspring, Jawbreaker, Filter, The Deftones, Primus, Mudhoney, The Melvins and numerous others.

After a short hiatus from the music business, Jeff decided to focus on the aspect of the business that had attracted him to it in the first place: the music.
He built a studio in Berkeley, California (The Hearse) complete with what he proudly deems the "best sounding drum room." Check out pictures here.

Once again, Jeff began seeking out talented new bands. He recorded demos with the bands he found, and this led to record deals for them - The Drama signed to Geffen, The Lovemakers signed to Interscope, and The Killers signed to Island. Jeff went on to record and co-produce (with the band) The Killers' multi-platinum debut album, "Hot Fuss."
